This is a delight! It is fresh, bright, vibrant, complex and intense – in a word ‘exhuberant’. There’s ripe white peach, nectarine and honeydew melon flavours and, while the fruit is dominant, even expressive, there’s an oak grip especially on the finish. More generous due in part to the inclusion of a new clone, it remains a pristine example of chardonnay grown in the ultra-cool Piccadilly Valley. While very satisfying young, the wine is expected to age beautifully for at least ten years.

Only 1,800 bottles (150 dozen)

Grown in the Piccadilly Valley, Adelaide Hills Barrel fermented exclusively in French oak barriques (40% new) for 10 months; only partial natural malolactic fermentation

I love the way Grosset has united the concentration and magnitude of a low-yielding season with the tension of a cooler vintage. Not an easy balancing act in which to uphold pretty floral aromas and intricately integrated French oak. The result is as seamless, crystalline and enticing as ever, charged with all the energy and confidence that hold exciting expectation for a long and distinguished future.

Light, bright lemon-yellow colour and a subtle, reserved bouquet of lemon, almond, honey and subtle smoky, buttery croissant overtones. The wine is refined and intense in the mouth, with a winning combination of drive and subtlety. The line and length are impeccable and it promises to reward cellaring. Delicious now, too. 08 FEB 2024

Only 150 cases produced. Copying my note for the 2021, this wine seems much the same, though maybe it’s a little more intense? Quite a technical expression of Chardonnay, unquestionably high quality, though it’s what you might call a wine played with a straight bat. Nectarine, ripe lime, cashew and nougat, sweet spices and cedar, just a flicker of aniseed. It’s a flavoursome wine, bold in its delivery of classic Adelaide Hills flavour, but has excellent control and shape, with flinty strikes to the texture, and bright citrus acidity on a gently creamy finish of excellent length. Also, maybe some candied lime rind in the mix too. Very good. MAR24
